Visit our Facebook page to see inside the classroom of Columbia Art Teacher Alison Hosier. Students in her Drawing I and II classes are creating macro portraits based on a photograph of a person that means something to them.
The process has included a number of steps:
- Select a photograph of the individual
- Utilize chromebooks to format the photograph to focus on one part of the person’s face (making it a macro portrait)
- Print the photo in grayscale and a draw a 1″ grid directly on it
- Draw a 2″ grid on final drawing paper
- Using light pencil lines, draw the composition for their portrait lightly in pencil square by square
On Thursday, students reviewed the drawing of another student in class and completed a Peer Critique as a way of offering constructive criticism. Then students returned to their artwork and considered that feedback. Throughout the activity, Ms. Hosier offered guidance to students and answered their questions.
The macro portrait project has allowed students to learn about charcoal materials, including vine charcoal, compressed charcoal, white charcoal, charcoal pencils, blending tools, and kneaded erasers.
