East Greenbush Central School District Physical Therapist Kathryn Biel, DPT, was recognized at the New York State Senate Women of Distinction awards ceremony on Tuesday. She received this recognition for her collaboration with Senator Jake Ashby’s office in advocating for legislation to ensure timely wheelchair repairs for individuals across New York State.
Dr. Biel has worked tirelessly to introduce and support Killian’s Law (2025-S6369) and the Wheelchair Bill of Rights (2025-S4500A). These efforts aim to improve access to timely wheelchair repairs and protections for all individuals who rely on wheelchairs, including East Greenbush student Killian Polarolo, for whom the bill is named.
As a physical therapist, Dr. Biel helps students increase their mobility, improve motor function, and learn skills that enhance their academic performance and all aspects of their lives. She works with students in three East Greenbush schools, including Goff, Genet, and Green Meadow.
“It is such an honor to be recognized by Jake Ashby and the New York State Senate with the Women of Distinction Award” said Dr. Biel. “I became a physical therapist because I wanted to help individuals with physical disabilities reach their fullest potential. What began as a passion for physical rehabilitation has evolved into a lifelong commitment to advocacy, accessibility, inclusion, and protecting the rights of people with disabilities. I am incredibly thankful to be able to do work that not only changes lives, but also helps build a more compassionate and inclusive community in the East Greenbush Central School District community.”
Congratulations!
