During a hands-on “Skittles Science” activity on Wednesday, students simulated weathering of rocks by dripping water onto the colorful candies.
Before the experiment began, students formulated hypotheses about what might happen. They made a variety of predictions like the Skittle changing color, the water changing color, and the Skittle changing in size.
Each student used a pipette to carefully drip 10 water droplets at a time onto their Skittle. Students observed the changes and then drew pictures on their worksheets and used crayons to show the color changes. At the end of the lesson, students answered discussion questions about the experiment.
The activity ties directly to the current Benchmark unit of “Wind and Water Change Earth” and serves as a fun primer for their upcoming field trip to Howe Caverns in June.
