Green Meadow Elementary School hosted its annual Flag Day ceremony on Friday morning, bringing students and staff together to honor the nation’s colors and recognize three beloved educators. Students assembled in the parking lot facing school and wore red, white, and blue and waved small American flags.
During the special event, the American flag flying above the school was ceremoniously retired. Members of the local VFW Post 7337 took down the flag, folded it and presented it to Student Council co-advisor John Flanagan. Then they raised a new flag above Green Meadow.
The Green Meadow Student Council led students and staff in the Pledge of Allegiance, the Star Spangled Banner, and a history of the American flag. Principal Dan Garab noted the special nature of this year’s event because of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
As a special tribute during the ceremony, retiring teachers Diane Cohen and Bruce Otto were presented with American flags in decorative display cases as a token of gratitude for their years of dedicated service to Green Meadow.
Principal Dan Garab, who is also retiring at the end of the school year, was presented with a plaque in the flag pole garden in front of school. The Green Meadow PTO led a beautification project in that space which included Brad Rose Landscaping donating their time, expertise and plants. The plaque reads: “With gratitude for your leadership, dedication, and lasting impact as Green Meadow Principal 2013-2026.”
