The East Greenbush Central School District appointed Stephen Karandy as the new Director of Data and Technology at the public Board of Education meeting on Wednesday evening. He will succeed Peter Goodwin, who is retiring at the end of the school year, and will officially begin his new role on August 3.
Mr. Karandy brings a strong background in school leadership, instructional technology, and data-driven student support to East Greenbush. He spent the first seven years of his career as a classroom teacher before moving into school administration as an assistant principal.
Mr. Karandy currently works in the Mohonasen Central School District, where he serves dual roles as the Administrator for K-12 Instructional Technology and Assistant Principal at Mohonasen High School.
“This is a vital role for the district in ensuring that we secure our network infrastructure so that it can best support our students and staff,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kurtis Kotes. “Mr. Karandy will also join our leadership team in assisting with creating a future vision for the use of technology in our schools, best preparing students for higher education, trade school, the military or the workforce. I am confident that he carries the necessary skills to do so and will help best prepare our technology department for the future.”
Mr. Karandy has extensive expertise in managing both the instructional and operational sides of school technology. At Mohonasen, he led the district’s Artificial Intelligence initiative, developing comprehensive AI policies and guidelines. His expertise in this rapidly evolving field is recognized at the state level; he has consulted with the New York State Education Department on state guidance for AI and has presented on the topic at the New York State School Boards Association and the Northeast Regional Information Center.
As an assistant principal, Mr. Karandy has utilized data to reduce chronic absenteeism and address student behavior.
He also leads Mohonasen’s Technology Committee and serves on the Professional Development Committee and Safety Committee.
“I am honored and excited to join the East Greenbush Central School District as Director of Data and Technology,” Mr. Karandy said. “East Greenbush has a strong reputation for academic excellence, community pride, and supporting students, staff, and families. I look forward to working collaboratively with district leaders, educators, technology staff, and the school community to strengthen systems, support instruction, protect student data, and use technology in ways that create meaningful opportunities for all students.”
Mr. Karandy has a bachelor’s degree in history from UAlbany, a master’s degree in education from The College of Saint Rose, and a certificate in administration from SUNY Plattsburgh.
