Red Mill Elementary School fifth graders walked through a red and white balloon arch and received certificates for successfully completing elementary school at their Moving Up Ceremony on Thursday morning in the school gym. It was standing room only as parents and families waved, cheered, and took photos.
Each of the 5th grade teachers – Jennifer Adams, Ken Bailey, Tammy Daoust, Brittany Harrison, and Caterina Marra – announced their students by name and congratulated them while Principal Helen Squillace handed them their well-earned certificates.
In her address, Mrs. Squillace, who is retiring at the end of the school year, thanked families for their support and congratulated the students.
“To our parents and families—thank you,” Mrs. Squillace said. “Thank you for being partners with us every step of the way. Your involvement, encouragement and your trust in us – it has made all the difference. And to our graduates—Each of you has left a mark on this school. You’ve filled our classrooms with curiosity, our hallways with laughter, and our hearts with pride. As you move forward to middle school, remember that Red Mill will always be a part of your story. We will always be cheering you on.”
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kurtis Kotes also attended the Moving Up Ceremony and congratulated the students.
“The excitement, joy and emotion in the room were clearly felt as we celebrated our students,” Dr. Kotes said. “But we all had mixed emotions as we celebrated one special Red Mill ‘Graduate’ today: Mrs. Squillace. Her fifth graders gave her a resounding round of applause as we all thanked her for her dedication and celebrated her retirement. Congratulations Mrs. Squillace! And to all of our Red Mill fifth graders, we are so proud of you! Have a wonderful summer and we look forward to seeing you in the fall!”
The students will join Howard L. Goff Middle School as 6th graders in September.
