Howard L. Goff Middle School hosted its 8th Grade Elevation Celebration on Thursday evening in the Columbia High School gym where students received certificates signifying the end of middle school and a new beginning as high schoolers.
Interim Principal Jim McHugh, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kurtis Kotes, Student Council President Bellamy Cottrell, and Special Education Teacher Kristen Zilgme all spoke at the ceremony, sharing reflections with the students and their families.
“We’ve come to the end of our Goff adventure,” said Mrs. Zilgme, who is retiring at the end of this school year. “We finally made it. It only took me 27 years.
“It feels like it was yesterday when you were nervous 6th graders worrying about your lockers and getting lost when trying to find your classes,” she continued. “Now, here you are, ready to take on high school.”
The students will enter Columbia High School as freshmen in September. When they arrive, they will have new opportunities and new responsibilities.
