Columbia Adds Unified Bocce Team

Columbia High School will offer a new Unified Bocce team for students this fall, following a proposal to the Board of Education at its public meeting on Wednesday evening. Starting in September, the team will be open to all students in grades 9-12, bringing together those with and without intellectual disabilities to train, compete, and build friendships.

Expanding Our Unified Sports Community
Similar to the existing Columbia Unified Basketball and Unified Bowling programs, the Bocce team will operate under the umbrella of Special Olympics New York.

The decision to add Unified Bocce was based on several factors, including an increase in participation in Columbia Unified Sports, student and family interest, and the low cost to operate the program.

Year-Round Inclusivity
With the addition of Unified Bocce in the fall, students will now have Unified sports offerings available to them in every athletic season:

  • Fall: Unified Bocce
  • Winter: Unified Bowling
  • Spring: Unified Basketball

“It is exciting to welcome Unified Bocce to Columbia Athletics, joining our successful Unified Bowling and Unified Basketball programs,” said Mr. Jones. “The addition of bocce creates even more opportunities for students of all abilities to team up, compete and represent our school with pride. I would like to thank the Board of Education and Dr. Kotes for supporting the implementation of Unified Bocce and helping us continue to expand our Unified Sports offerings.”

Facilities and Funding
To support the new team, the East Greenbush Central School District will provide three bocce courts at Columbia High School and purchase three bocce sets and uniforms. The coach of the team will be compensated through grant money and not out of the school budget.

“Bocce presents an additional opportunity for all students to be engaged in activities that run beyond the regular school day,” said Dr. Kotes. “We are very happy to support this program for our students and their families.”

Registration for Unified Bocce
Interested students can register for the Unified Bocce team through FamilyID starting August 24.
