Health and Safety Committee

The purpose of the Health and Safety Committee is to assist the Board in promoting a safe, secure and healthy school environment and keep current comprehensive district-wide and building level safety plans which address violence prevention, crisis intervention, emergency response and management for the benefit of students, staff, parents, and visitors.  The Committee fulfills this purpose through implementation of the provisions of Board of Education Policy #8112, Health and Safety Committee.

Annual Objectives/Priority Areas

The Health and Safety Committee’s annual objectives and priority areas are as follows:

  • Review health and safety guidance from the State Education Department for compliance purposes
  • Provide member or members to participate in school building annual visual inspections, as required
  • Provide consultation for the building safety ratings assigned as part of the Building Condition Survey and annual visual inspections (if required)
  • Expand membership to include the architect, construction manager, and contractors to monitor safety during construction
  • Be involved in the investigation and disposition of unresolved complaints submitted by students, staff or parents related to health and safety
  • Address unresolved complaints related to excessive noise
  • Ensure that environmental quality complaints that require maintenance are properly addressed (an optional reporting form is provided as exhibit 8110.1-E.1)
  • Engage in building and site review and provide recommendations to the Board for safety and security capital improvements
  • Participate in post-construction inspection to confirm that a building area is ready to be opened for use
  • Initiate content for required safety notifications to staff and/or parents
  • Review health and safety laws, rules, and regulations and assist Superintendent in implementing protocols to assure compliance
  • Receive periodic reporting from food service, operations and maintenance, health services and transportation departments
  • Coordinate safety, security, and emergency response protocols with outside organizations such as Greenbush Child Caring
  • Consult with building principals on daily security procedures
  • Develop and review safety protocols within district-wide and building level emergency response plans
  • Assist Building Principals in conducting tests each school year of emergency response procedures including procedures for sheltering and early dismissal and suggest modifications as appropriate
  • Secure training for staff on hazard communication, bloodborne pathogens, AED and CPR, emergency response and management, violence prevention, and crisis intervention
  • Review Board of Education policies related to health and safety and provide recommendations for modifications to the Board Policy Committee
  • Explore, review, and study particular health and safety areas as requested by the Board of Education and Superintendent
  • Share health and safety information, best practices and review process with individuals from other school districts as requested
