The East Greenbush Central School District’s Board of Education will host two public hearings for tax exemptions at the January 10 meeting in Central Administration. Residents are invited to attend the meeting and comment on the agenda items.

Cold War Veterans’ Exemption

The Board of Education approved the Cold War Veterans’ Exemption on January 11, 2017 and it went into effect for the 2017-18 school year. It allows veterans who served in active duty, other than training, in the Armed Forces between September 2, 1945 and December 26, 1991 and were discharged or released under honorable conditions, to apply for an exemption on residential property.

School districts may adopt a resolution to provide the Cold War veterans’ exemption beyond the original 10-year limitation.

Eligible Funds Veterans’ Exemption

On October 23, 2017, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed Chapter 376 into law expanding the Eligible Funds Veterans’ Exemption on real property to school taxes. It allows veterans who purchased their home with eligible funds (e.g., proceeds from a veteran’s pension, insurance, POW compensation) to reduce the assessed value of their primary residence before the tax rate is applied.

School districts may adopt a resolution to provide the Eligible Funds Veterans’ Exemption.
