Dear Genet Families!

Happy Friday to you and your family! This week we kicked off our “March Madness” tournament during our morning program with students. During the month of March, authors will be pitted against one another for students to select the winner and who will move forward in our March Madness Bracket of Authors! Students will be treated to several stories by the same author and on Fridays, they will vote for which author they enjoyed more. We have a total of 8 authors that were nominated by staff to share with students. The culmination of the event will take place on Friday, April 3 with the unveiling of which author was voted by students to be the bracket winner! Stay tuned for updates!

Our Wacky Wednesday saw some amazing mismatched combos! I applaud all the students who participated and their crazy attire and hair they did that day! I cannot wait to see what you and your child(ren) come up with our next event in April!

Attention 5th Grade Families!!! Today, your child(ren) came home with a letter from Goff Middle School’s principal, Mrs. Jill Barker, regarding the upcoming parent orientation for 6th Grade and parent articulation letter. It is on blue paper for Genet. This event will take place on Tuesday, March 10th in the Goff Middle School gymnasium. Please take a moment to review the letter and fill out the articulation letter and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher. If you have any questions, please feel free to either email Mrs. Barker at barkerji@egcsd.org or myself at Genet.

REMINDER: Mark Your Calendars!!! Informational flyers for Genet’s upcoming STEM Fair were sent home with students several weeks ago. We are looking forward to student participation in this wonderful school wide event! Please take a moment and review the details outlined in the flyer. The STEM Fair will take place on Wednesday, March 18th from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM.

Another event that is taking place on the same night as Genet’s STEM Fair, is Dessert Night at Goff Middle School. This event is sponsored by the Education Foundation of East Greenbush and is a wonderful night to watch some of our school’s choral groups as well as take part in some delicious snacks that are provided by each school’s PTO. I encourage you to attend either (or both) of these events on March 18th! There will be a flyer that will come home with students from the Education Foundation with more details next week.

Genet’s Lip Sync information was sent home last week! The date of our event this year is later than usual because of calendar conflicts with various events. This year, the event will take place on Friday, April 24th. If you have any questions, please feel free to email the PTO or reach out to the main office for another flyer. I am looking forward to this event!

Updates from the Library, by Mrs. Garno
This week Genet celebrated Read Across America Week from March 2nd – 6th in the library. Students in Kindergarten and first grade heard stories and spent time sitting quietly to look at/read books of their own choosing. In grades 2 through 5, students will have an extended period of quiet reading during their library classes. If students are reading something at home, they are more than welcome to bring that book to the library with them this week. It is important for students to have time to read and discover what interests them. This helps them to develop skills that will last them a lifetime. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sarah Garno, at garnosa@egcsd.org.

Updates from the Physical Education Department, by Mr. Jones and Mr. Leyhane
This week Physical Education classes were finishing up the lacrosse unit. Next week classes will begin doing station work which involves the students moving from station to station and practicing a variety of skills. Some of these skills include juggling, hula hooping, floor hockey, and some project adventure activities. Running Club intramurals usually starts after April break. However, if the weather continues to improve we will be looking to start running club earlier. We will send permission slips home when we feel the track is dry enough and the temperature is warm enough.

Upcoming events at Genet:

  • March 10—5th to 6th Grade Parent Orientation Presentation at Goff Middle School Gymnasium, 6:00-8:00 PM
  • March 12—K-5 Half-Day. Dismissal begins at 11:05 AM. Parent-Teacher Conferences in the afternoon
  • March 20—No school for students, Professional Development Day for staff

Thank you for your continued support of Genet and from all of us here at Genet, we wish you a happy and healthy upcoming week!

Sincerely,

Wayne Grignon
Principal
