It’s fishing season for Howard L. Goff Middle School as some students have been learning about fishing poles, bait, knots and casting. More than 40 students attended an educational workshop at Goff in May and 21 students went on a fishing trip to the pond at East Greenbush Town Park on Tuesday after school.
The students have been working with volunteers from the Rensselaer County Conservation Alliance, Regeneron, and Trout Unlimited, as well as Goff staff including Assistant Principal Mike Neumann and Social Studies Teacher Shawn Yearsley.
During the field trip to the town park, students practiced putting worms on hooks and casting into the pond. A few of the students caught fish before releasing them back into the water.
“The day was a success,” said Interim Principal James McHugh who accompanied the students on the field trip. “We had students participate that had a lot of experience as well as some students who have never fished before. We had a few minutes of rain, but the weather held out and we had a lot of fun.”
