School Budget Vote and Board Election - May 21

The East Greenbush CSD has proposed a school budget for 2024-25 that maintains all programs and services with a 0.55% tax levy increase, which is within the NYS Property Tax Cap. Residents will also vote on a $116 million capital project that would improve school facilities and grounds across the district with no impact to local taxpayers, the replacement of eight school buses, which if approved by voters, will be fully paid for by the Bus Purchase Reserve Fund, and elect three individuals to the Board of Education.

Ribbon cutting for the new DPS Little Free Library

Donald P. Sutherland Elementary School hosted a ribbon cutting for its new Little Free Library in front of the school earlier this month. The Little Free Library at DPS is stocked with books and puzzles that children can take home for free.

The project was a collaboration between the school and the Kiwanis Club of East Greenbush. The Kiwanis Club provided the little library and then it was painted by Head Custodian Frank Cramer, Art Teacher Mary Kay Ostwald and Teaching Assistant Mary Truss.

The Little Free Library at DPS is painted red with the DPS logo on the side. It has glass doors on the front that open, a gray roof, and above it, there is a yellow sign that reads: “The World of Reading lies through these doors and under the roof.”

Several members from Kiwanis Club came to DPS on June 5 for the ribbon cutting and to officially add the little free library into the Little Free Library Index.

The idea for a little free library began in Spring 2022 when Library Media Specialist Peg O’Connor and Mr. Cramer began discussing it as a future project for the school.

“So many people helped to make this project possible,” said Mrs. O’Connor, who noted that students have already been taking and leaving books in the little free library. “We are so happy to be a part of spreading the joy of reading.”

Special thanks to Lynne Catelotti from the Kiwanis Club of East Greenbush, Mr. Cramer, Mrs. O’Connor, Mrs. Ostwald and Mrs. Truss!
