School Budget Vote and Board Election - May 21

The East Greenbush CSD has proposed a school budget for 2024-25 that maintains all programs and services with a 0.55% tax levy increase, which is within the NYS Property Tax Cap. Residents will also vote on a $116 million capital project that would improve school facilities and grounds across the district with no impact to local taxpayers, the replacement of eight school buses, which if approved by voters, will be fully paid for by the Bus Purchase Reserve Fund, and elect three individuals to the Board of Education.

Donald P. Sutherland Elementary School unveiled its 2023-24 school flag on Friday during its Character Education Assembly in the gymnasium. Principal Jack Alvey and fifth grader Molly Hatch, who designed the flag, did the honors as each of them pulled on a rope to uncover the flag that was displayed high on the gym wall.

Ms. Hatch’s design features the DPS eagle walking on the moon with the earth in the background. The American and DPS flags are planted on the surface of the moon on either side of the eagle.

“I thought this school is out of this world, so why not do an outer space one,” said Ms. Hatch, who designed the flag last year as a 4th grader.

Mr. Alvey said the annual flag design contest fosters creativity and school pride in students.

“The flag Molly made for this school year is exceptional!” said Mr. Alvey. “It was very creative and unlike any flag that we have had in the past. To see her excitement and pride when we unveiled it together is so rewarding. Our school flag has become a symbol of our school community’s effort of being proud to go to DPS!”
