Students at Donald P. Sutherland Elementary School became engineers on Thursday as they learned about STEM topics such as forces, electrical impulses and light waves all while working in teams to solve problems.

DPS students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades participated in engaging activities – like building rollercoasters with foam tracks and controlling a robotic claw – which were led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute students who are members of the RPI Engineering Ambassadors.

“Our ultimate goal is to expose students to STEM in an interactive and hands-on way,” said Lauren King, a Rensselaer graduate student who is majoring in nuclear engineering. “We want to get them excited about what engineering can be.”

Special thanks to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineering Ambassadors for visiting DPS!
