The MAP 7 class at Howard L. Goff Middle School conducted a mock trial of King George III on Thursday as part of their American Revolution unit in Social Studies. The class analyzed the Declaration of Independence for grievances or crimes that the king allegedly committed.
Students acted as the prosecution team, defense team and jury. The prosecution called witnesses to testify about the alleged crimes, and the defense called witnesses to argue that the king had the right to do those actions.
Goff Teaching Assistant Maureen Janowski portrayed King George III, even donning a white curly wig and wearing a crown on her head.
The jury reached a verdict and declared the king guilty.
“The kids did a great job using both textual and contextual evidence with their arguments and testimony,” said Goff Social Studies Teacher Timothy Galvin.
