School Budget Vote and Board Election - May 21

The East Greenbush CSD has proposed a school budget for 2024-25 that maintains all programs and services with a 0.55% tax levy increase, which is within the NYS Property Tax Cap. Residents will also vote on a $116 million capital project that would improve school facilities and grounds across the district with no impact to local taxpayers, the replacement of eight school buses, which if approved by voters, will be fully paid for by the Bus Purchase Reserve Fund, and elect three individuals to the Board of Education.

DPS Guest Author Amber Owen
Donald P. Sutherland Elementary School hosted a virtual guest author visit on Monday afternoon with children’s book author and illustrator Amber Owen, who writes under the pen name Z.B. Asterplume. Ms. Owen discussed her book “Sometimes, A Tiger,” as well as writing, illustrating, and publishing.

During the virtual visit, Ms. Owen showed the book to students and pointed out drawings inside it. Sitting in her studio, she was able to grab other works to show students, including her upcoming book “Sonnet.”

Ms. Owen is a debut author whose book was read by DPS students during the school’s Caldecott project, in which they read picture books and voted for their favorites. Ms. Owen responded to DPS Librarian Peg O’Connor on instagram, who had been posting updates about the project, and they arranged for a virtual visit.

“Students loved hearing about a book they had loved during the Caldecott project directly from the author,” said Mrs. O’Connor. “Z. B. Asterplume shared so many interesting secrets behind the story that made it so much more meaningful to us.”
