Columbia High School celebrated its October Students of the Month last week. Each student winner was nominated by a teacher or staff member for various categories such as Academics, Citizenship and Most Improved. Congratulations!
A’Mia Carter (Grade 9)
Nominated by: M. Boomhower for Academics
Alison Johnstone (Grade 9)
Nominated by: A. Neiman for Citizenship
“Earlier this year, students introduced themselves to the class by sharing a Google slide with photographs of their interests. Students were invited to share a link to a song or poem or anything else that would help us get to know them better. One of our students, with special needs, chose to share his favorite song. The song began to play and the student started to dance along to the music. He then pointed to Alison. Without hesitation, Alison left her seat at the table and joined him at the front of the room. She followed along with him as he demonstrated the dance to her. Alison’s classmates and I were so moved by her kindness, enthusiasm and poise that day. Everyone watched silently and awestruck. When the song ended, Alison and her classmate received a round of applause. I cannot recall another time, in my seventeen years of teaching, that my students and I have been so touched by an act of compassion like that. Alison is a gem and I feel so fortunate to have her as a student this year.”
Brady Martyn (Grade 10)
Nominated by: S. Rockwell for Citizenship
“Brady tries his best everyday in Spanish! He makes flashcards, stays on task and is so nice to everyone in class. He goes out of his way to help anyone who needs it!”
Ei Aung (Grade 11)
Nominated by: D. Kelly for Academics
“Ei came into the Writing Center to work and get help with an assignment in her English class: a literacy narrative. It was written in such a beautifully poetic tone and structure that I have virtually no comments to improve on it. Her creative writing skills are top-notch, and she should be recognized for her proficiency in artistic expression and her ability to imaginatively convey a conflict that many students face on a daily basis to varying degrees.”
Sophie DeSantis (Grade 12)
Nominated by: V. Gordon for Citizenship
“Sophie helped a student next to her when the student suddenly felt ill. She talked to her to keep her calm (the student felt like she was having a panic attack because she felt she might get sick). Sophie was so kind and calm. She also walked her to the nurse and cleaned up her supplies when she returned to the room.”
Keonna (Keke) Robinson (Grade 12)
Nominated by: K. Peffers & A. Culligan for Citizenship
“On multiple occasions Keke has brought in donuts for her classmates. On one particular occasion she gave donuts to her classmates and then gave a dozen to another group of (Questar or Academic Skills) students. I found this to be very kind and considerate of her!”
