There were feelings of pride and joy on display throughout the Columbia High School Class of 2024 Graduation Ceremony on Saturday morning at Hudson Valley Community College. It was felt by everyone in attendance – the students, teachers, staff and families.
Students wore radiant smiles, waved to their families and walked confidently across the stage in their caps and gowns to accept their high school diplomas.
Students spoke eloquently about their time in the East Greenbush Central School District, they performed songs and recited original poetry.
Salutatorian Aurora Forte ’24 thanked her teachers for helping her, and her classmates learn and grow through the years.
“Thank you to all of my teachers, from kindergarten through senior year, for encouraging me to challenge myself and work hard to achieve my goals,” said Ms. Forte. “You all have been a significant influence on me, and without your guidance, I wouldn’t be here today.”
As students reflected on their time in school, they also looked to the future with optimism. The 299 graduates in attendance will be moving on to college – such as Emory University, Purdue University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Syracuse University, University of Virginia, and UNC Chapel Hill – trade school, military service and the workforce.
“Everyone in this class deserves the chance at whatever life they choose,” said Class President Alexis Szemplinski ’24. “While the road that lies ahead after high school is uncertain, may be challenging and seem overwhelming at times, the beauty now is that you can choose your own path.”
And they also challenged each other to go out into the world and make a difference.
“Believe in something,” said Valedictorian Caitlin Weinheimer ’24. “Believe in anything. Vote. And embrace your future with confidence because we are young people. Columbia 2024, keep your eyes wide open.”
