Each school year, the East Greenbush Central School District makes provisions for up to five emergency closings by building them into the school calendar. At this point, the district has used all five of its emergency closing days.

Emergency Closings Used This School Year

  • December 16, 2022
  • January 20, 2023 (school is now in session on April 6, 2023)
  • January 23, 2023 (school is now in session on April 17, 2023)
  • February 28, 2023 (school is now in session on May 30, 2023)
  • March 14, 2023 (school is now in session on May 26, 2023)

What Happens if Additional Emergency Closing Days are Needed?

In the event that additional emergency closing days are needed this school year (e.g., winter weather, power outage, etc.), the school district has two options:

  1. Implement remote learning for that day
  2. Have a traditional “snow day” that day and make a day from Spring Recess an in session school day (starting with Friday, April 14)

Because Friday, April 14 is the last day of Spring Recess, there are concerns regarding high student absences, as well as having enough teachers and staff to cover classrooms should that day be changed to an in session school day.

Therefore, the district has decided to implement remote learning for any emergency closing days that occur between now and the end of the school year.

Remote Learning Plans

Administrators, teachers and staff have updated remote learning plans in the event of an emergency closing. On a remote learning day, students would learn from home with a mix of synchronous (e.g., logging onto a Google Meet with teacher) and asynchronous school work which would vary by grade level.

We understand that remote learning is not ideal, however, the NYS Education Department requires a minimum number of instructional days in a given school year and permits remote learning to be used on days when weather or other extraordinary conditions prevent schools from providing in-person instruction.

Specific instructional information and activities would be provided to students/parents directly from their teachers. Remote learning will only be implemented in the event of an emergency closing day.
