The East Greenbush Central School District Board of Education approved a proposal for Columbia to join a swim team merger for the 2023-24 school year at its public meeting earlier this month.

Columbia Athletic Director Ryan Jones submitted the proposal to the school board based on student interest and the fact that there is no current swim team or swimming pool available for those students.

“I would like to thank the Board of Education and our administration for supporting and approving the swimming proposal,” Mr. Jones said. “I believe providing our students with the opportunity to participate on a swim team as part of interscholastic athletics will be very beneficial and rewarding to the student body, as well as our community. Partnering with the additional Suburban Council schools will allow our students access to the Troy High School swimming facility and allow our students to compete at the highest level.”

The merger requires approval from the league and the Section 2 Merger Committee. If approved, Columbia students will have the opportunity to compete in swimming this coming school year.

Proposed Girls’ Swim Team

  • Compete in Fall 2023 (register here)
  • Columbia would merge with Troy and Averill Park
  • The team’s home pool would be at Troy High School
  • Columbia swimmers would practice and attend meets with Troy/Averill Park but swim as individuals this fall (applying for full merger in 2024-2025 school year)

Proposed Boys’ Swim Team

  • Compete in Winter 2023-24 (registration will open in October)
  • Columbia would merge with Troy and CBA
  • The team’s home pool would be at Troy High School
  • Columbia swimmers would practice and compete at meets with Troy/CBA
