Construction at Columbia High School turf field

The turf field, track and drainage system is being replaced at Columbia High School this summer as part of the Capital Project.

The East Greenbush Central School District is planning to complete its $39 million Capital Project by the end of next school year, ending an extensive multi-year project that has improved aging infrastructure in buildings across the school district.

The Capital Project was approved by district voters in 2017, and even with obstacles created by the pandemic such as supply chain issues and lack of workers, the district has pushed through and made significant upgrades at all schools. This includes replacement of aging systems, safety and health improvements and updated technology and instructional classroom spaces that will benefit students, staff and visitors.

“We’ve been fortunate with the bid results we have received on the last phases of this capital project. To our surprise, they were lower than expected,” said Director of Facilities Paul Bickel. “That has allowed us to add in a couple of much needed upgrades on top of the originally planned project scope. While these changes are adding slightly to the overall length of time of the original project, they are not adding any additional costs.”

The items that will be completed this summer include replacement of the turf field at Columbia High School, replacement of heating and cooling pipes at Howard L. Goff Middle School, new windows at Genet Elementary and the front portion of Donald P. Sutherland Elementary School, refinishing of gym floors, roofing repairs, and paving at select parking lots.
